ARTWORK

1967: At age 12, I created two small, psychedelic-style posters captioned ‘Enter the Twilights Zone’ and ‘Phil Jones and the Unknown Blues’. In 1994, they were featured in the Real Wild Child exhibition at Sydney’s Powerhouse Museum, which in 2010 acquired The Deb Doyle Music Archive.

As a 12-year-old, I showed the two posters to pop-music impresario and Op-Pop Disco manager Ivan Dayman, who commissioned me to paint a psychedelic-style mural on the wall of the entry to the basement disco, which was located in Castlereagh Street, Sydney. I painted the names of some of the Australian bands who’d played at the disco.

In early 1968, the mural became the backdrop for a fashion shoot that Irene Combe and another young ‘dolly bird’ model did for the popular Everybody’s magazine.

1968–69: I created a sketchbook of colourful music-themed and ‘flower power’ posters, along with various loose-leaf artworks, which also became part of The Deb Doyle Music Archive.

1977–82: As the Assistant to the Union Activities Officer at the University of Sydney Union, I created various handbills, posters, term calendars, advertisements, menus, tuition brochures and other ephemera.

I was also commissioned to create various handbills and posters for Sydney concert and venue promoter Bob Yates. I created ‘weekly line-up’ handbills for the Civic Hotel.

1983: I created line drawings for the four part-opening pages in the Community Services Manual published by the Local Government and Shires Associations of NSW.

1986: I created the cover illustration for an issue of Fringe Magazine published by Fringe Network, Melbourne. I also created a personal Christmas card.

1987: I was commissioned to create a municipal calendar for the City of Fitzroy.

I was also commissioned to create the cover illustration for Leichhardt Festa magazine.

1991: I was commissioned to create the ‘teenage character’ concepts for the illustrations in the textbook Mastering Grammar written by Edward Down and published by Longman Cheshire.

2004: I was commissioned to create the line drawings for the book Career Doctor: So, you want to be a doctor? self-published by Professor Sydney Nade.

I was also commissioned to create the line drawings and cartoons for the anti-bullying booklet Getting Connected self-published by Rose Cantali.

2015: For Bob Yates, I created a ‘Happy 70th birthday’ handbill in the style of the Civic Hotel handbills I created for him during the late 1970s and early 1980s.

I also created the colourful animal-rights poster I captioned ‘Give pigs a chance’, which I sell online and at vegan and cruelty-free festivals and expos.

2019: I completed two courses at Waverley–Woollahra Art School: You Can Draw Anything, with Richard Byrnes, and Life Drawing, with Joshua McPherson.
